It is with mixed feelings that we’d like to announce that CrossFit Winnipeg is retiring our annual FrostFit Games. This event has been a huge part of the CrossFit community in Western Canada for almost 10 years and it’s hard to imagine the new year without it. Some of my fondest CrossFit competition memories took place under January sun-dogs and many feet of snow.
There were many sleepless nights programming events and organizing volunteers, and countless hours preparing the gym and cleaning up afterward, but there are so many amazing moments that I will never forget. The windows fogging up from the heat and sweat, the vibrations from the energy in the gym as the music boomed and spectators cheered for the athletes. First place finishers encouraging the athletes who were still working, and the hugs and high fives that ensued. Competitors PR’ing their cleans and getting their first muscle-ups. The smiles of the generous volunteers, and the concentration on the faces of the judges. What are your fondest FrostFit memories?
Our mission at CrossFit Winnipeg has always been Happiness through Health, and over the past year or so we’ve made a concerted effort to shift our resources to re-align with that mission. When CrossFit HQ recently announced moving resources away from the Games toward health and Wellness, this was a welcome re-enforcement of our own choice to focus on our members’ health and happiness.
FrostFit was never approached as a financial opportunity for CrossFit Winnipeg, it was more about inspiring our members to reach beyond their limits to gain insight into their potential. Back in 2009 when we hosted the inaugural FrostFit Games at our old gym on Des Meurons, there were very few opportunities to compete in the sport of fitness, and we wanted to create an opportunity for competition as a tool to motivate and inspire. Over the years, the CrossFit community has grown and we’re confident that the athletes who are motivated by competition will have many opportunities to do so in 2019.
We encourage our members to put themselves out there and be part of the awesome community that has evolved over the past 10 years, however, we look forward to nurturing our community from the inside out. We have some amazing events planned for the year, including charity fundraisers, in-house team workouts, nutrition and lifestyle workshops and challenges, and family-oriented events. We hope to see you there!
Lastly, and most importantly, I would like to thank all of the amazing volunteers, judges and athletes who have supported FrostFit over the years. FrostFit is all about community and none of it would be possible without your time and effort. You made FrostFit something to look forward to every year and an experience we’ll never forget. You are all amazing and I can’t thank you enough.
9 years of FrostFit. Countless memories. Cheers to the next chapter!
